The role of online communication in building trust in medical knowledge

The project will provide theoretical and empirical insights into the mechanisms with which people adapt to situations where scientific evidence is fragile. It will deal with medical knowledge in particular, which is often uncertain and tentative, in some respects even consisting of conflicting perspectives (e. g. between orthodox and alternative medicine). Laypeople who are confronted with mass media coverage on health risks or severe illness have to reduce uncertainty. However, due to the complexity and fragility of medical knowledge they are in general not able to manage the problematic medical situation by searching and processing medical knowledge on their own. Instead, they develop metacognitive strategies of creating trust, which allow them to indirectly judge the trustworthiness of medical knowledge of others by judging the trustworthiness of the mediating authority. Thus, trust in medical knowledge is inherently bound to the trust in the corresponding selection mechanisms of the communicative arenas the knowledge is presented in.
The project will analyse these trust building mechanisms by comparing different communicative arenas, focussing especially on online-based arenas. Focus groups and a representative survey will give insights into the ways laypeople generate trust in medical knowledge, and which characteristics of the communicative situation have influence on the formation of trust.
